Today, Congressman Henry Cuellar, Ph.D. (TX-28) and the City of Laredo celebrated the ribbon cutting for the Market Street Elderly Affordable Rental Housing Project.

The project was made possible by $1,296,695 in federal grant funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). $1,281,695 was provided by HUD’s HOME Investment Partnerships (HOME) Program, and $15,000 was provided by HUD’s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program.

“The Market Street Elderly Affordable Rental Housing Project will provide low-income elderly Laredoans with affordable amenities, ensuring peace of mind knowing they have a place to call home,” said Dr. Cuellar. “As a Senior Member of the House Appropriations Committee, I’ve fought hard to secure federal dollars for HUD’s HOME and CDBG Programs. We’re seeing the results of that today. Thank you to Dr. Victor Treviño, Mayor of Laredo, and the Laredo City Council for working with me to build a stronger, more resilient community for our seniors.”

The Market Street Elderly Affordable Rental Housing Project will provide affordable housing units to assist low-income elderly individuals. The project comprises two 1-bedroom apartments, five studio apartments, and one community laundry room. Ultimately, the Project will decrease housing insecurity while promoting social inclusion and community engagement among Laredo seniors.

Dr. Cuellar is a strong supporter of community development. Last year, he announced $247,100 in federal funding for Laredo’s Vietnam Veterans Plaza. Those funds were provided by HUD’s CDBG Program.
