ICYMI: Rep. Cuellar Secures $650 Million for Shelters and Services Program

Laredo | Tony Wen, Press Secretary (202-856-8750), March 25, 2024

In case you missed it, U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar, Ph.D. (TX-28), Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security, secured $650 million in the FY24 Homeland Security funding for the Shelters and Services Grant Program, an effort he helped establish in 2014. Ranking Member Cuellar released the following statement:

“The FY24 Homeland Security funding bill is a thoughtful and measured approach that will provide much-needed relief to South Texas communities.

“Ultimately, I am pleased that Democrats secured $650 million for the Shelters and Services Grant Program, an effort I helped establish in 2014. This important FEMA grant program is a lifeline to border communities like mine and supports community organizations as they aid migrants awaiting the outcome of their immigration proceedings.

“While we fought for more money, we had to work against Republicans who wanted to zero out funding for the program entirely, which would have devastated nonprofits like Catholic Charities in San Antonio.

“As Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security, I will continue working at all levels of government to enact strong border security measures and ensure that our border communities, as well as San Antonio, are equipped to handle influxes of irregular migration.”
